Please Consider this letter as a submission to the public consultation on the regional forest assessment for the South Coast Forests

The Hon. Bob Carr

Premier of NSW

Parliament House,

Macquarie Street, Sydney, 2000

Dear Mr Carr,

I write to urge you to protect the South Coast and Tumut forests.

These forests, between Nowra and Narooma and the Tumut area, are some of the most special in the State, containing magnificent wilderness, rainforest, old-growth and high-biodiversity forests. They are critical to a world class National Park system and water catchment protection but are still under threat from logging, woodchipping and coastal development.

The South Coast forests protect some of the most magnificent and undeveloped stretches of coastline in NSW. They protect water catchments, threatened species and rare or unique communities of plants and animals. They guard fragile coastal ecosystems, which support exceptional levels of biodiversity and superb coastal lakes, including Swan Lake, Termeil Lake, and Lake Durras, so important for tourism, the biggest industry on the South Coast.

The Tumut forests range from magnificent old growth and wilderness Mountain Ash giants in the Snowy Mountains to precious western woodland remnants which are vital havens for wildlife in an otherwise cleared landscape.

Many of these important forests also lie within wilderness areas. Some of the State’s best wilderness areas, like the Deua Wilderness and Tuross Wilderness which are under threat from logging, should be fully protected as an exceptional part of the South Coast’s natural heritage.

Please remember your promises to save the forests. Please protect as new National Parks, all the community reserve proposals developed by the conservation movement for the South Coast and Tumut. Please bring an end to intensive logging and clearfelling and make the South Coast and Tumut a Woodchip Free Zone. Please protect all old growth and wilderness forest. This will help to achieve your vision for NSW to have "the best National Park system in the world."

Please Protect the South Coast and Tumut Forests Now.

Yours sincerely,
