Supplement to National Parks Journal, APRIL 1999 National Parks Association ACTIVITIES SUPPLEMENT May-June 1999

Grading system for walks A single grading system suitable for all people and all activities is not possible. Instead, NPA activities are described by the three factors - distance, ascent and terrain - which most determine the overall difficulty.

Potential hazards on activities Whilst walks vary greatly in difficulty, dangers such as poor weather, river crossings, rock climbing and other hazards can be encountered and cannot always be anticipated. Participants on NPA activities must ensure that they have adequate fitness and that they are suitably equipped. Participants must also make sure that they are aware of the conditions likely to be encountered and have adequate experience for the activity which they intend to undertake. If in doubt, participants should speak with the leader for further information.

Bookings Please give reasonable notice to leaders if you wish to join an activity, and verify all transport and meeting details. People leading activities for the NPA do so on a voluntary basis and may decline any person's request to attend. The leader's permission must be obtained before inviting friends or bringing children on activities. Please follow any restrictions of the times at which leaders wish to be contacted.

Search and Rescue Leaders should leave full details of their trip with a responsible person. The NPA is affiliated with the Confederation of Bushwalkers, which maintains a voluntary Search and Rescue section to assist those in difficulties in the bush. In the event of an overdue party or other incident ring the following NPA contacts: Lyn Gett: 9790 7130 David Shepherd: 4226 6565 Richard Thompson 9213 8033 (W), 9144 1392 (H) You may also contact Search and Rescue via pocket pagers by phoning 016 020 from anywhere. Ask the operator to send your message (including return phone number) to pager number 277 321.

LIABILITY Every person participating in an activity conducted by the National Parks Association of NSW Inc does so as a volunteer in all respects, and as such accepts responsibility for any personal injury, however incurred.

The Association, its office bearers and walks leaders cannot accept liability in regard to any injury or damage suffered by any person while engaged in any NPA activity.

Walks/Activities Deadlines Jul - Aug Mar 29 Sept - Oct Jun 04 For more information about leading walks please contact Richard Thompson 9144 1392 (after 7pm) or richard@ips.gov.au Enjoy Your Walking! Richard Thompson, Sydney Branch Field Activities Coordinator W elcome to our May-June walks program.

NPA members were sad to hear of the recent death of Henry Fairlie-Cuninghame. Henry was a long-time member of NPA, a leader for very many years, and had a huge experience of walking throughout the State. He was also a key member of the Activities Committee and we all greatly appreciated his advice and experience.

On a happier note, the annual W to W walk is on August 14 this year. But because of the construction of the new spillway for Warragamba Dam we will be going to Glenbrook instead of Warragamba. So we now have the W to G walk and, as before, there will be several starting locations with the groups converging on Glenbrook for a BBQ. It should be a lot of fun once again.

And finally a true story from a recent walk.

Henry Roda decided to sleep out as the night was fine. He awoke in the morning to find that a wombat had marked its territory during the night in the usual way on a rock just a foot from his head! The moral of the story: Henry is an excellent sleeper; and also very wise for making sure that there were rocks nearby - could have been a real problem otherwise!

CANCELLATION OF BOOKINGS Please note that if you book on a walk and then decide to cancel, you should let the walks leader know. Aside from being common courtesy it allows other NPA members to attend the walk.

Information about NPA Walks Want to know more about bushwalking or NPA activities? Contact any one of the following NPA members - Richard Thompson 9144 1392 (eve - after 7 pm) Steve Bennetts 9411 4908 (evenings) Henry Roda 9948 2715 (daytime and evenings) See May 22/23 for leadership training, and 2 May for navigation skills

NOTICE: Field activities are listed for the convenience of members and for the interest only of prospective members and bushwalkers generally. SHARING TRANSPORT COSTS When transport is arranged by private car it is normal for passengers to share the costs with the driver. Taking into account some of the extra costs of running a car, the following formula is suggested: Calculate the contribution of each person by adding 50% to the cost of fuel and dividing by the number of occupants.

Share equally any additional costs such as park entry fees and so on.

For example if fuel costs $40, a single passenger (plus the driver) pays $30. For two passengers, each will contribute $20.

Many NPA activities rely on the generosity of drivers in providing transport and this suggestion does not fully compensate for their costs. Please make sure that you do contribute.

ON THE TRACK TEN anemones with waving tentacles inviting the unwary. See the crabs scuttling away like shy millionaires with hidden money. Let the artist in you admire the designs, the colours of the Great Artist in the Sky.

Murramarang is a place of quiet forests, stands of imposing spotted gum showing their mottled flesh to the world.

In the gullies the burrawangs gather, the naked seeds glowing orange at the base of the spreading prickly leaves. They're ancient plants, the cycads, related to the modern pineapple. Aborigines discovered that treating the seeds carefully would leach the poisons out and make them edible. How many of them died before this was known?

Murramarang is a place of sweeping beaches, emerald-green seas, rock pools teeming with hidden life; the green, the pink, the grey, cleverly blurred in the pool margins. This is where the Sydney sandstone basin ends on Dark Beach. The white and sandy northern end of the beach meets its nemesis in a collision with dark ancient chert and phyllite metamorphic rocks. Stand there and feel the forces that thrust these two together.

Touch the strange black rocks. The chert belonged to the Palaeozoic Era, which ended about 220 million years ago according to the geologists, and yet here you are as witness.

The rock pool deserves minutes of your time.

Sit down near it and scrutinise the sides. Is that the rock wall, or a creature camouflaged to fool the world? Look at the tiny transparent fish, the Walk through the beautiful forests that dip down to the pounding surf. Canoe on the lakes shimmering with clouds, their water softly lapping the shore. See the waves flash golden and blue through the trees, hear the sussing of the surf, smell the salt. Cast your body into the healing ocean and let it be tossed with waves.

Scan the horizon. If you are lucky, you may see a whale blowing spume as it travels north. Watch the sky. Sea eagles circle slowly overhead, scanning the sea and land for prey.

The foreshore beyond Pretty Beach contains a little wonder called "The Singing Stones". In an ocean amphitheatre, the waves push stones up a rocky shore. As they roll back, they sing. What are they singing?

"Slow down, watch, listen, breathe." The gifts of Murramarang are many.

Should one place be so beautiful?

Yes, because nature is abundant.

All we have to do is protect her.

A Bushwalking Tragedy

My mates and I went walking
Along the banks of the Kangaroo.

The weather was hot and sticky.

It was nudging forty-two.

We knew a bonza swimming spot
Well off the beaten track
Although we'd found it years ago
We'd kept on going back.

My mates and I were long-time mates;
No one was feeling shy.

Our gear came off in no time flat -
No stripping on the sly.

Whilst some sun-baked on the bank
Others chose to swim
And I was not slow in joining them.

Not me! Not "Jungle Jim".

I thrashed around for quite a while
Before I came to grief -
Swallowed water, started coughing
And promptly lost my teeth!
My gnashers sank before my eyes.

As I made a frantic lunge
Then they settled on the bottom
At the end of their fatal plunge.

And they grinned up from the bottom
That was fully eight feet deep.

Too deep for me to duck-dive down.

Oh Lordy! I could weep!
For, though my name is Jimmy
And I am known as "Jungle Jim",
I'm no Johnny Weissmuller
And cannot dive like him.

My efforts, vain, at diving down
Only stirred the bottom up
Until my teeth were lost from view
And I had to give it up.

My Memory

I've forgotten where I walked last week
And even yesterday.

Was it cold and wet, or hot and dry?

Did we go the normal way?

Was the leader one I'd met before,
Whose name I can't recall?

And at the end was the coffee shop
In the street or in a mall?

I remember to pay my outstanding debts
And never forget a date.

When I go to a party, I find my own way
And remember to take a plate.

But there's something about remembering walks,
That some of us seem to find:
They make you fit, improve your body,
But they sure don't help your mind.
