Wednesday 8 March 2000

IAN COHEN MLC

"Managing The Future"

Ian Cohen was elected to the NSW Legislative Council as its first Green member in 1995. He is author of the book Green Fire, an account of the Australian environmental movement, a movement which has

transformed Australian politics.

"Are we as a community destined to look out over fields of devastation and marvel at the small pockets of magnificance we have rescued from an industrial onslaught?

Do we have a cultural responsibility to influence the attitude of society regarding biodiversity and conservation?

We are faced with an intense biological imperative. Directions taken legislatively, legally and with community action at this point in history will be critical for managing the future."
